NBA Draft 2014: Latest Rumours

With the NBA Draft getting into overdrive, I thought I’d have a look at some of the latest rumours surrounding it.

1. Cleveland Cavaliers – With Joel Embiid’s foot injury resulting in him going from consensus number 1 pick to a 3rd pick at best and 12th pick at worst, the Cavaliers have had to rethink their options. The Cavs are now looking mainly at Jabari Parker as the number one pick, with his NBA-ready game the main drawcard for a win-now Cleveland franchise. CBSSports Ken Berger states in his article that ‘Rival executives believe it would be out of character for Cleveland GM David Griffin to trade the top pick.’ The Cavs look extremely highly likely to take Parker, with him being atop their draft list all season.

5. Utah Jazz – Reports from Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio and Spencer Checketts of 1280 The Zone in Salt Lake City, the Jazz have Alec Burks, Derrick Favors and the 5th and 13th picks in play for the #1 pick. The most likely situation here appears to be the Jazz offering Burks, Favors, and 5th pick for #1 pick (via Checketts). This would definitely shake-up the draft, but as stated above, Cleveland appear highly unlikely to accept any trade offers.

6. Boston Celtics – Via Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix:

Several league sources believe that Celtics GM Danny Ainge is locked in on Gordon… A trade is possible here, too. Ainge is always on the lookout for a make a blockbuster deal, and with Boston’s assets he is more than equipped to do so.

The only disclaimer here is if Joel Embiid is on the board. Gerry Callahan of the Boston Herald claims that ‘If Joel Embiid’s there, the Celtics would take him.’ This is not hard to believe from an aggressive GM like Danny Ainge, Embiid’s injuries are expected to recover fully and he could be the steal  of the draft. The Celtics are also taking offers for trading the pick.

8. Sacramento Kings – NBA and Yahoo! sources have corroborated that the Kings are willing to trade this pick, especially if a guy by the name of Kevin Love is involved. The Sacramento Kings are fielding offers from three teams for the No. 8 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, sources with direct knowledge told ESPN Monday. The Kings are also reportedly keen on Marcus Smart and Elfrid Payton; two point guards would cover them if they were to let go of Isiah Thomas in Free Agency. The Kings will also take serious consideration to drafting Aaron Gordon if he is still on the board.

9. Charlotte Hornets – The Hornets are very keen on Creighton senior Doug McDermott. The Small Forward would fill a gaping hole in the shooting department with Kidd-Gilchrist having a very poor shot. The Hornets are also reportedly looking at Michigan’s Nik Stauskas for the exact same reasons. According to CBSSports Ken Berger, the player not taken with this pick will be taken by the Philadelphia 76ers with pick 10. Dougie McBuckets looks the favourite here with Michael Jordan’s habit of taking seasoned college veterans.

11. Denver NuggetsBerger states that the Nuggets have made a promise to Saric that they will select him with the 11th pick:

“There are strong indications that Dario Saric’s invitation to the draft-night green room is the result of a promise from the Nuggets to grab him with the 11th pick. Teams in the mid-to-late lottery have tried to get Saric to come in for workouts, but have been told he’ll be gone by the time they pick.”

This is often the case with foreign born players, teams will make a promise to select them to entice them to keep their name in the ring. But according to ESPNs Chad Ford, Saric may have thrown a spanner in the works here.

“Breaking: Dario Saric has agreed in principle to a three year deal with Anadolu Efes. The deal will essentially prohibit Saric from playing in the NBA for a minimum of two years the source told ESPN.”

This news is reportedly via a source close to Saric himself. If this is true, do not be surprised to see Saric take his name out of the Draft for a second year running.

Other Late Mail:

  • Orlando Magic have worked out Marcus Smart twice, reportedly keen on him with possibility of Exum being off the board. Also looking closely at Noah Vonleh.
  • Elfrid Payton is the biggest riser up NBA Draft Big Boards, working out strongly for multiple lottery teams.
  • Bucks prefer Andrew Wiggins to Dante Exum if Parker is off the board.
  • Embiid will not be picked in the top 3 and could slip as low as 12th according to some GMs.
  • Toronto Raptors looking closely at Shabazz Napier and Tyler Ennis with the 20th pick, in case Lowry leaves in Free Agency.
  • Dante Exum unlikely to slip to Magic number 4.
  • Lakers more than likely to keep #7 pick but are exploring what it’s worth packaged up with Steve Nash.

Enjoy the draft coming up on Friday (here in Australia) I know I will!
